Nobody tells you about this at orientation. Orientation is for the campus map and a tote bag.
Here is the thing nobody put in the tote bag: if you're using the GI Bill, you have to verify your enrollment every month, or your housing payment stops.
Not once a semester. Every month.
What VA actually asks you
Two details. That's the entire interaction:
- Your credit hours or clock hours
- The start and end dates of your enrollment for that month
That's it. It takes under a minute. I have missed it anyway, more than once, which is the only credential I bring to this desk.
Who has to do it
Verification applies if you're using any of these:
- Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)
- Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD)
- Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)
- VET TEC 2.0
- Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA)
If you're on Post-9/11 or VET TEC 2.0, you sign in and verify with VA's online tool. MGIB-AD, MGIB-SR, and DEA use their own tool. If you're on the Rogers STEM Scholarship, or you just don't want to do it online, there are other ways to verify — VA lists them on the same page.
What happens if you don't
Your Monthly Housing Allowance stops.
Not "gets delayed." Stops. And the fix is not instant, because now you are in a queue behind everybody else who also didn't know, and your rent is on a schedule that does not care about queues.
I want to be extremely clear that this part is not a joke: the money stops. That is the one sentence in this article I'd like you to keep.
Set it up so it can't happen
Do this today, it takes four minutes:
- Put a recurring calendar reminder on the 1st of every month, titled
something you will not swipe away. Mine says the amount I lost.
- Turn on VA's text reminders if you haven't. There is an opt-in for
verification reminders and it exists because of people like me.
- Verify from the reminder, not from memory. Memory is how this happens.
And then there's the person who can actually fix things
Your School Certifying Official.
Every VA-approved school has one. It is a real job. That person is the one who reports your enrollment to VA in the first place, and they can see things about your file that you cannot. When something is wrong — a payment that didn't land, hours that don't match, a schedule change that hasn't propagated — they are the first call, not the last.
Most students go three semesters without learning that role exists. I went four. Find out who yours is this week, before you need them, because the week you need them you will not be in a mood to go looking.
The boring but important part
Verification requirements and the tools change. This is current as of the date at the top. Before you act on any of it, confirm with your SCO — that is what they are there for, and they will know your school's specifics better than any article.
Also: Chapter 31 (VR&E) is a different benefit with different rules. If you're on Chapter 31, none of the above is automatically yours. Different desk, different day, and I'll write it.
