Three items from the past week. Two of them are structural and one is about individual recognition.
Ground Combat Element 2040
What happened. The Marine Corps released Ground Combat Element 2040, its fiscal year 2026 strategic framework, on August 26.
Who it affects. Anyone currently serving in or supporting the Marine ground combat element, and — over a longer horizon — the shape of the force that today's separating Marines will be veterans of.
What it means for you. In the near term, very little. Strategic frameworks are planning documents, not orders, and the distance between a published framework and a changed unit is measured in years. Their value to a veteran reader is directional: they tell you what the service says it intends to become.

National Guard State Partnership Program conference
What happened. Senior leaders and security cooperation personnel gathered in Atlanta for the 2026 State Partnership Program conference, to align program activities with national defense strategy lines of effort.
Who it affects. Guard members in states with active partnerships, which is most states.
What it means for you. SPP pairs a state's National Guard with a partner nation for long-term military-to-military cooperation. For a Guard member it is one of the more accessible overseas assignment paths, and it does not carry the same footprint as a mobilization. If you are in the Guard and have never looked at whether your state has a partnership, that is a five-minute question for your readiness NCO.
Upgraded awards for Abbey Gate
What happened. Three retired Marines received upgraded awards for valor in a Pentagon ceremony on August 26, recognizing their actions immediately following the August 26, 2021 suicide bombing at Abbey Gate in Kabul.
Who it affects. Directly, three people and their families. More broadly, this is the awards review process working — a mechanism that continues to reconsider recognition years after the fact.
What it means for you. If you believe an award from your own service was processed incorrectly or incompletely, that process exists and has a path. Your service's awards branch and the Board for Correction of Military Records are the two doors. It is slow. It is not closed.
We are not going to narrate what those Marines did. It is theirs, it is on the record, and the citation says it better than we would.
